Introduction

The current landscape of restaurant management systems is overwhelmed with complex and fragmented applications, lacking a unified and minimalistic approach. This poses significant challenges for restaurant owners and managers in effectively leveraging autonomous systems to streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and maximize profitability.

Challenge

Design a minimalistic application that attempts to utilize an autonomous system that provides management for restaurants.

Objectives

♦ Identify existing systems that majority of up-to-date restaurants utilize to manage their restaurant.

♦ Define the main pain points for managers and owners of the restaurants.

♦ Examine the most used tools to minimize clutter and optimize the user overall experience.

Desk Research

In the discovery phase, I conducted an competitive analysis and on-call interviews with local businesses to determine the four key players in the restaurant management platform market: OpenTable, Toast, Square, and UpServe.

These platforms cater to various operational needs, such as reservations, point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory tracking, analytics, and customer relationship management, providing tailored solutions for restaurants of all sizes.

From the initial research, I wanted to emphasize on these main points:

Fragmentation and Integration Issues: Using multiple disconnected platforms creates inefficiencies, data silos, and operational disruptions, making it harder to streamline workflows and manage resources effectively.

Customization and Flexibility Constraints: Limited customization options prevent restaurants from tailoring workflows, payment systems, and customer preferences, reducing their ability to adapt to specific operational needs.

Operational Inefficiencies and High Costs: High costs for proprietary hardware and manual workflows increase expenses and errors, negatively impacting both staff productivity and the customer experience.
